MAY IS LUPUS AWARENESS MONTH

The lupus foundation describes lupus as one of the world’s cruelest, most unpredictable, and devastating diseases. It depicts the impact of Lupus on those who suffer from it as brutal.

Being in the middle of a significant flare-up myself makes me even more determined to reach out not only to those who have this disease, but to those who have no idea what the symptoms are like or the havoc they can cause in a person’s life, relationships and future.

While it may seem an obscure disease, it is estimated to impact 1.5 million people in the US alone, but all reports caution that this is a serious underestimate.

I wrote Shatter My Heart (a novel) because the characters drew me into their lives. Then, enfolded into each of their unique and fascinating personalities, the mysterious symptoms, the difficulty finding a diagnosis, the impact on relationships and the necessity to have caring support from family and friends, emerged as an entity of its own.

But this book is so much more than that. It is an adventure into what makes marriages work or fail, what true friendship looks like and how to honor someone with a chronic illness while remembering they are still able to reach out to others with help and hope.

Shatter My Heart is an intriguing, dynamic story of four individuals lives are shattered as one of them is searching for answers to her symptoms and later ways to live constructively with the disease. One reviewer says of this novel, “tender where it needs to be tender, intense where it intensity is necessary.” My hope is that while you read a captivating story, you also find a deeper understanding of invisible and chronic illness.
